Our picks for most overrated degrees right now

An unfortunate reality, as of now, is that many college majors are just not worth it unless you're going for a very specific program. Unfortunately, that message hasn't caught on for these degrees. Here are our picks for most overrated degrees, and why they're overrated in 2 or less sentences.

Psychology

Bad employment without an advanced degree, tons of people doing it, and not a whole lot of employment at the entry level. Only do this if you're planning on going to advanced schooling.

Biology

Controversial, but low employment at the entry level, WAY too many people doing it, especially because of the glut of failed pre-meds, heavily concentrated industry in a few areas, low entry level salary, and pretty much everyone in the industry higher ups has advanced schooling. Like psychology, only do this if you're getting an advanced degree.

Communications

Unlike the 2 above, this one not only doesn't teach you much in the ways of hard skills. This means you're basically only able to get jobs that anyone else could get, with or without a degree.

Sociology

Same issue as psychology, but somehow slightly worse.

English

When most of the english majors I know and have known end up teaching english, it's a problem. It's kinda like a pyramid scheme, where they sell you the degree so you can sell the degree to others.

CS

Alright, this is definitely not for the reason you'd think. All the stats are great, but it's overrated. Why? Because it's a glut at the entry level from so many non-passionate students looking to make a quick buck, and these students often don't realize they need projects, brains, and commitment to succeed in CS, leading to a lot ending up in non CS jobs, all because they couldn't learn how to reverse a linked list. Overrated, absolutely, but also one of the best degrees for someone passionate about computers.
